Worried About Safety in Raleigh Karate Training? Here Are 4 Helpful Tips!

From lack of confidence to nerves over physical fitness, there are plenty of reasons why people interested in karate are hesitant to commit. However, one of the biggest fears people have is being hit. Safety in Raleigh karate training is our dojo’s primary concern. The good news is there are several practical tips for overcoming this obstacle. To learn what they are, read on!

Wear the Right Equipment

Safety is priority number one. Before you begin practicing with a bag or sparring an opponent, make sure to wear the right protective equipment. This will help cushion any hits you take, making the experience much less stressful. You should also talk to your dentist about getting a custom-made mouthguard. That way, your chances of experiencing a dental injury, like a knocked-out tooth, are significantly lower.

Practice in a Controlled Setting

Fear of being hit is natural, especially if you’re new to karate. To ease your nerves and build your confidence, it’s of the utmost importance that you practice in a controlled setting. With an instructor leading the way, you’ll know what to expect and have an expert guiding you through every exercise. Each day, you’ll build your proficiency and increase your skill.

Develop Your Defense

In karate, it isn’t just hit or be hit. While you’ll learn jabs, roundhouse kicks, and the like, you’ll also be trained on defensive moves, including dodging and deflecting. That way, you can protect yourself from oncoming attacks and adapt as you spar.

Spar With Control

The only time I’ve ever seen someone get hurt in my 15 years of karate training was when someone had lack of control. People reciprocate the level of contact you hit with, so be controlled. Also, be prepared to say no if someone makes you feel uncomfortable.

As previously mentioned, having a fear of getting hit is completely normal. The good news is that karate classes can actually help you overcome this fear while teaching you how to protect yourself from any oncoming attacks!
